Vietnamese world-renowned mathematician Ngo Bao Chau leaves US for Asia's top university

Professor Ngo Bao Chau, the only Vietnamese mathematician to have won the Fields Medal, is leaving the University of Chicago after 15 years to take up a position at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) from June.

🇻🇳 Giáo sư Ngô Bảo Châu – nhà toán học Việt Nam duy nhất từng giành Huy chương Fields – sẽ rời University of Chicago sau 15 năm công tác để nhận vị trí mới tại University of Hong Kong (HKU) từ tháng 6 tới.

HKU confirmed the move to VnExpress on Thursday morning.

A week earlier, the university, ranked Asia's No. 1 institution in the QS World University Rankings 2026, announced it had also recruited Vietnamese mathematician Vu Ha Van, a leading expert in combinatorics, probability and random matrix theory, to its mathematics department.

HKU president Xiang Zhang described Professor Ngo Bao Chau's appointment as a significant milestone in the university's pursuit of academic excellence, saying it would open new research directions and further strengthen Hong Kong's position as a global academic hub bridging East and West.

"The university's globally connected environment and interdisciplinary culture provide ideal conditions for breakthrough research," Professor Chau said. Professor Chau said he chose HKU from among several offers from major universities, noting that he had been considering a return to Asia for more than a year. In addition to wanting to be closer to his family as his parents grow older, he said the move would allow him to pursue a long-held ambition to become more deeply and consistently involved in training young people in Vietnam who are passionate about mathematics.

Ngoài mong muốn gần gia đình khi cha mẹ ngày càng lớn tuổi, ông cũng muốn theo đuổi khát vọng lâu dài là tham gia sâu hơn, bền bỉ hơn vào công tác đào tạo thế hệ trẻ Việt Nam yêu toán học.

"HKU's financial offer is comparable to those from U.S. universities, although the scientific environment is not yet as vibrant," he said.

Over the past 15 years, Professor Chau has typically returned to Vietnam twice a year, spending two to three months in the summer and two to three weeks in the winter, mainly to handle work at the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), where he serves as scientific director. As a result, he said he has not been as involved in teaching and training as he would like, noting that producing strong, high-impact doctoral dissertations requires a steady pipeline of high-quality graduate students.

🇻🇳 Trong 15 năm qua, Giáo sư Châu thường về Việt Nam hai lần mỗi năm, dành 2–3 tháng mùa hè và vài tuần mùa đông để làm việc tại Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), nơi ông giữ cương vị Giám đốc khoa học. Do đó, ông cho biết chưa thể tham gia nhiều như mong muốn vào công tác giảng dạy và đào tạo, trong khi việc tạo ra các luận án tiến sĩ chất lượng cao đòi hỏi nguồn nghiên cứu sinh ổn định, chất lượng.

After moving to Hong Kong, he plans to visit Vietnam more frequently, about once every two weeks. In addition to supervising graduate students, he intends to organize clubs and seminars for gifted secondary school and university students in mathematics, helping them engage regularly with fundamental research.

🇻🇳 Sau khi chuyển sang Hồng Kông, ông dự định về Việt Nam thường xuyên hơn, khoảng hai tuần một lần. Ngoài hướng dẫn nghiên cứu sinh, ông có kế hoạch tổ chức các câu lạc bộ và hội thảo dành cho học sinh, sinh viên năng khiếu toán, giúp họ tiếp cận nghiên cứu cơ bản một cách thường xuyên.

He also aims to establish a regional Asian mathematics research network, creating a shared academic space for scientists across the region.

🇻🇳 Ông cũng hướng tới việc xây dựng một mạng lưới nghiên cứu toán học khu vực châu Á, tạo không gian học thuật chung cho các nhà khoa học trong khu vực.

Professor Chau won the Fields Medal in 2010, often described as the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics," at the International Congress of Mathematicians for his work on the Fundamental Lemma in the theory of automorphic forms. The result resolved a key conjecture in the Langlands Program, a far-reaching framework linking geometry and number theory. The Time magazine named the work one of the world's 10 most important scientific breakthroughs of 2009.

🇻🇳 Giáo sư Ngô Bảo Châu giành Fields Medal năm 2010 – thường được ví như “Nobel Toán học” – tại Đại hội Toán học Thế giới nhờ công trình về Bổ đề cơ bản trong lý thuyết dạng tự đẳng cấu. Born in 1972 in Hanoi, the professor attended the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences and became the first Vietnamese student to win gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad twice, in 1988 and 1989.

He later received a French government scholarship to study at Paris VI University in 1990 and defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Paris-Sud at the age of 25.

🇻🇳 Năm 1990, ông nhận học bổng Chính phủ Pháp theo học tại Đại học Paris VI và bảo vệ luận án tiến sĩ tại Paris-Sud University khi mới 25 tuổi.

In 2003, he completed his habilitation, equivalent to a Doctor of Science degree, at the University of Paris-Nord and was appointed professor at the University of Paris-Sud the following year. That same year, he received special consideration to become Vietnam's youngest professor.

🇻🇳 Năm 2003, ông hoàn thành Habilitation (tương đương Tiến sĩ Khoa học) tại Paris-Nord University và được bổ nhiệm giáo sư tại Paris-Sud năm sau đó, đồng thời trở thành giáo sư trẻ nhất Việt Nam thời điểm bấy giờ.

Since 2010, he has been a member of the mathematics faculty at the University of Chicago while also serving as scientific director of VIASM, contributing to the development of mathematics in Vietnam.
