In 1940 the school was renamed Lycée Gia Long. With the new name came a new uniform: the purple dresses were replaced by crisp white ones, each bearing a bright yellow apricot‑blossom badge.
After the fall of Saigon in 1975, the institution took the name of revolutionary Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. It continued as a girls’ school until 1978, when the lower secondary section was closed and the school opened its doors to both boys and girls, becoming Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School.
The campus still shows many original architectural features – tiled roofs, arched windows and historic brickwork – while modern classrooms, laboratories and a green, clean environment have been added to meet today’s educational needs.
For many consecutive years the school’s Grade 10 admission scores have placed it among the five highest in the city, and in some years it has ranked second only to Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, making it one of the most sought‑after public high schools in Ho Chi Minh City.
These three renamings reflect Vietnam’s shifting political and social landscape, turning a modest girls’ school into a prestigious high school and turning the campus itself into a living museum of Saigon’s past and present.
