Private Plasma Donation Clinic Stops Collecting in Canada
A private plasma donation clinic has stopped collecting plasma in Canada due to unwanted attention.
Grifols told us they chose to stop collecting plasma and told Health Canada about it.
The clinic stopped collecting plasma on the same day Health Canada said they found some problems. Health Canada gave a notice of non-compliance to a Grifols site in Winnipeg.
Health Canada's report said the clinic did not always take good care of its equipment or keep good records of staff training.
Health Canada has given notices of non-compliance to Grifols clinics in several provinces since 2022. They are still checking a clinic in Etobicoke, Ontario.
Some people want to stop paid plasma donations because two people died after donating plasma at a Winnipeg clinic.
A family member of one of the people who died said the autopsy showed the donation put a lot of stress on the donor's heart, which was already enlarged.
Health Canada said the deaths were not related to the donation process.
Grifols said the safety of donors and plasma collection has never been a problem.
Health Canada said the temporary closure will not affect the safety of Canada's blood supply and they will work with Grifols to fix the problems.
Grifols said they will work with Health Canada to address the concerns.
