Why the National Gallery of Australia is sending Blue Poles to Western Australia
The Australian government bought Blue Poles in 1973 for $1.3 million, which was then the highest price ever paid for an American painting. In 2023 the artwork is valued at about $500 million.
The loan is needed because the NGA in Canberra is carrying out a $320 million capital works program. At the height of the construction, 60‑70 percent of the gallery will be closed, so the painting would not be easy for visitors to see.
NGA director Nick Mitzevich said, "It's the first time we've loaned Blue Poles [within Australia] for more than two decades, and it's the first time it's going to go to WA," he said. This is the first loan of the painting within Australia in more than twenty years.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the original purchase an "extraordinary investment" and added, "It will bring a lot of tourism here to the west." He said the loan helps people in all parts of Australia see great art and also supports tourism in Western Australia.
By moving the painting, the NGA keeps the public able to enjoy a world‑class artwork while its own building is being repaired, and Western Australia gains a boost in visitors.
