Canada Investment Summit aims for $1 trillion to boost economy amid trade tensions

The multi‑day Canada Investment Summit began in Toronto, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The event’s main goal is to attract about $1 trillion in new foreign investment to support Canada’s economy.

The summit gathers some of the world’s biggest financiers. Attendees include Barclays chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan, Blackstone chief executive Jon Gray, CIBC chief executive Harry Culham, and former prime minister Stephen Harper, among others.

The summit’s pitchbook lists more than 160 projects, with 11 shovel‑ready projects and roughly two dozen in an advanced stage.

Finance Minister François‑Philippe Champagne announced a new program that will give priority to advanced income‑tax rulings for any investment exceeding $1 billion. The rulings let investors see how tax law will apply before they commit, reducing risk.

Faster permitting is another key promise. Canada Nickel’s CEO Mark Selby says recent changes have cut the time needed to obtain federal permits for the Crawford nickel project by about half, making large‑scale projects more feasible.

The summit comes at a time when trade tensions with the United States are creating uncertainty for many economies. By highlighting stability, clear tax rules, and quicker approvals, Canada hopes to position itself as a reliable alternative for global capital.

Organisers expect the event to generate “good deals” and memorandums of understanding that could translate into real investment over the next year, helping to strengthen jobs and growth across the country.
