AI‑driven debt collector ARMA used fast, automated letters to bully an 81‑year‑old woman

ARMA Group, hired by Suncorp’s insurer AAMI, sent a series of letters to 81‑year‑old Diane Walker demanding payment for a car‑insurance claim she did not cause.

ARMA’s website says its workflows are “AI‑driven”, taking less than two minutes to set up a smart payment plan with no manual intervention.

The letters claimed Walker was liable and raised the amount from $1,175.51 to $1,395.51 without explanation, while also threatening court action.

Former ACCC chair Allan Fels described the conduct as “Robodebt 2.0” and warned it was an illegal, deceptive tactic used to bully and intimidate consumers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has filed a court case against ARMA Group and its partner Force Legal, alleging the two companies sent 320,000 misleading debt‑enforcement notices.

Legal experts and consumer‑rights groups say the rapid, automated process leaves little chance for a person to respond or explain their situation, raising serious concerns about oversight of AI‑driven debt collection.

After months of pressure, Suncorp apologized to Walker and paid her $1,500 in goodwill, while acknowledging that ARMA had handled the matter inappropriately.
