Police raid on upscale Scotts Road mall underscores Singapore’s harsh penalties for counterfeit luxury goods

Last Wednesday, Singapore police carried out a raid at a mall on Scotts Road, targeting two retail shops suspected of selling counterfeit luxury goods. The operation led to the arrest of two women, aged 39 and 54, who are believed to be involved in the trade.

Officers seized a range of fake items, including luxury handbags, watches, clothing, shoes and other accessories bearing false trademarks.

Under Singapore law, possessing goods with falsely applied trademarks for trade can attract a fine of up to $100,000, a prison term of up to five years, or both.

Scotts Road lies close to the famous Orchard Road shopping belt, which Cushman & Wakefield ranked the 13th most expensive retail street in the world based on annual rents.

The street is home to several malls such as Far East Plaza, Scotts Square and Shaw Center, highlighting why authorities focus on high‑profile retail areas to deter counterfeit sales.
