Prince William surprised by Harry and Meghan's return, Kate worries about new family tension, experts say

Dan Wakeford, who runs Celebrity Intelligence, talks about Prince Harry planning to come back to the UK, his link to King Charles, and why a meeting with Prince William is still unlikely.

Prince William said he was shocked when Harry and Meghan decided to come back to the UK with their kids. He did not see it coming.

Royal experts told Fox News that William and Kate are worried about Harry and Meghan staying for a long time starting this month. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, will start school in September, according to People magazine.

Kinsey Schofield, host of the YouTube show “Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered,” said to Fox News that William was surprised.

Prince Harry and Meghan’s move back to the UK brings fresh focus to their strong claims against the royal family.

He said Harry’s recent wish to spend more time in Britain was odd, but it is very different from a full return. William now faces a problem he did not cause, did not ask for, and given their strained relationship, would not have chosen.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson told Fox News they would never comment on private family matters.

A Sussex spokesperson told The New York Times that after a happy summer trip with family and friends, Harry and Meghan plan to stay in the UK this autumn. They are happy for their children to spend more time in the country that is important to their family story.

The spokesperson said the couple’s businesses will stay the same and remain based in the US. Meghan and Harry will also keep their home in California.

Helena Chard, a British broadcaster and photographer, told Fox News that William and Kate feel uneasy about another chapter in the “endless Sussex soap opera.”

Chard said the problem is broken trust. William feels Harry and Meghan have spent years attacking the monarchy and then making money from those attacks. He sees it as a campaign for profit and impact. William does not want to support or encourage that behavior.

William and Kate were seen arriving in Scotland on Thursday, where they will spend time with King Charles at Balmoral Castle. The family has used the Scottish estate for summers since Queen Victoria, enjoying hunting, fishing and riding there.

The king learned about Harry and Meghan’s move three days before it was announced, reports say.

Neil Sean, a royal broadcaster, told Fox News that William and Kate are at Balmoral with the king. Harry and Meghan have not been invited to see the king privately while he is on holiday. William has no desire to connect with his brother and has no time for Meghan.

An Archewell spokesperson said they do not comment on the family’s private travel plans or meetings with extended family.

The Daily Mail said the king and his heir held a “Sussex Summit” after the announcement. A source said William and Kate have no interest in engaging with anything Harry and Meghan do or say.

Hilary Fordwich, a British royal expert, said things will be tense at Balmoral. Catherine is especially guarded because she was deeply hurt by both of them. William and Catherine are determined to keep their family stable and focus on their royal duties.

Experts have told Fox News that William and Harry have not spoken since at least 2022.

Schofield said her sources see genuine concern in the Wales camp. She does not think William and Catherine are panicking at Balmoral, but they are understandably worried about what the return could bring. Recent years have shown them that private family tension often becomes public.

Schofield said the worry is not just that Harry and Meghan will be closer geographically. It is the unpredictability that comes with the Sussexes. There have been many interviews, books, documentaries and personal accusations about the royal family. The Wales camp has not forgotten the hostility after Harry and Meghan’s past public claims.

Schofield said unnamed sources told her Kate is also unsettled by the news.

Schofield said sources tell her Catherine does not want to revisit that part of her life. She has faced personal accusations, intense public scrutiny and a difficult few years. Her priority is William, their children and the future.

Meghan’s return does not mean Catherine must reopen a relationship that caused much hurt, Schofield said. Catherine can wish them well without letting them back into her private life. The idea of bringing back the “Fab Four” is fantasy. Too much has happened and too much has been lost.

The Sussexes are expected to live in a private home outside London, according to the Associated Press. They will not resume royal duties, which they gave up in 2020.

The couple’s return comes as the king continues treatment for an undisclosed cancer diagnosed in 2024. In 2025, Harry said he did not know how much longer his father has and wanted his children to know their grandfather.

Last month the king met with Harry, Meghan and their children at Highgrove House.

Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl reported that sources said even William and Kate were not told the meeting was happening.

Richard Fitzwilliams said the Sussexes played a clever move with the king welcoming them, having not told him last month of a plan they have had for ages as their children will soon be in school.

The move happened quickly, as Harry and Meghan waited to learn if their children were accepted to the private school they applied to.

Fitzwilliams said because the brothers have not spoken for years, the Sussexes’ arrival puts William and Catherine in a pressured situation. William is reportedly angry, but the king must accept that the Waleses and their children are the future of the monarchy.

Schofield does not think the brothers will reconcile soon, at least not any time soon.

She said geography cannot fix a relationship where trust is badly damaged. Harry’s return could make the estrangement clearer because people will ask why two brothers in the same country still do not see each other. William and Catherine may feel public pressure to try a reconciliation that likely does not exist behind closed doors.

Schofield said William may have decided that distance is healthier than trying to reconcile, and he is allowed to make that choice. The realistic goal now is not friendship but peaceful coexistence for their father’s sake. Harry and Meghan’s move brings them closer geographically, not emotionally. They can buy a house near London but cannot buy back trust.
