Queen Camilla Sets Aside Past Issues with Prince Harry as King Charles Looks for Family Unity

Why did King Charles finally choose Queen Camilla? Catherine Mayer, who wrote "Divide & Rule," explains the surprising love story that changed the royal family.

Queen Camilla says she will put King Charles III first while the family deals with Prince Harry’s return to Britain, experts said to Fox News Digital.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex came back to the UK on August 26. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, will start school in Britain in September.

Royal experts think the king, who is still being treated for an undisclosed cancer, wants a closer bond with his grandchildren. They say Camilla is ready to help her husband as Harry seeks peace with the family.

Before the Sussexes returned, the king met Harry, Meghan and their kids at Highgrove House on July 10. Katie Nicholl of Vanity Fair reported that even the Prince and Princess of Wales did not know the meeting was planned. Camilla was there.

"Camilla has survived far bigger storms than the Sussexes’ 2020 move or Harry’s book ‘Spare’," said commentator Meredith Constant to Fox News Digital. "She knows when to stay quiet. She will smile for her husband while he works on his bond with his younger son."

"While Prince William and King Charles do not always agree on how to handle Harry’s return, they see themselves as a team with their wives," Constant said. "William would not expect Camilla to oppose her husband any more than Charles would expect Kate to oppose him."

Royal biographer Tom Bower told the Daily Mail that Camilla gave her stepson an "olive branch" – a calm smile – and offered him tea. A source said the meeting was polite and without blame.

"It was a polite gesture, a small opening, not a full welcome for a return," royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital. "Offering tea is a traditional British courtesy. Camilla is devoted to the king’s health, so this is not surprising."

Royal historian Catherine Mayer told People that Camilla "is a non‑negotiable part of Charles’ life," adding that there can be no reconciliation with the king without her.

Reconciliation may take time for Harry. The Sussexes stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020, saying they faced harsh press scrutiny and little palace support.

After moving to California, they voiced their complaints in interviews and documentaries. Harry’s 2023 memoir "Spare" further strained family ties. Experts said Harry and his older brother William have not spoken since 2022.

After "Spare" was released in 2023, Harry claimed his stepmother leaked private talks to the media to boost her reputation.

In interviews, Harry said family members teamed up with the press, calling it "making a deal with the devil". He singled out Camilla’s attempts to improve her public image after her long‑term relationship with his father.

Camilla, once widely criticised, later won many supporters through charity work and backing the king. Charles was crowned in 2023.

"Yes, she was hurt by Harry’s harsh words," broadcaster Helena Chard told Fox News Digital. "But she is strong and remains a steady partner for the king, helping him through treatment and wishing him peace and health."

"Even though Harry’s insults are sharp, Queen Camilla feels a sad sympathy for a young Harry," Chard said. "She understands his deep issues, but their relationship remains complicated."

In 2023, Harry told Good Morning America that he and Camilla have not spoken for a long time.

"I love every family member, despite our differences," he said. "When we meet, we are polite and pleasant."

"She’s my stepmother," Harry said. "I don’t see her as evil. She married into this family and has worked hard to improve her reputation for herself."

In May 2025, Harry told the BBC he wanted peace, saying, "There’s no point in fighting any longer" and "Life is precious." He added he did not know how much longer his father had left.

A source told People that Harry had been thinking about moving back for a while. With Archie and Lilibet now school‑age, the timing felt right, the outlet said.

Royal experts expect Camilla and the rest of the family to stay calm and carry on.

"Royal family members do not make scenes," Constant said. "If they want news out, it will reach the papers. Camilla does not need to speak to send her message. As long as her son does not interfere with her husband’s reign, it is business as usual."

Chard believes Camilla is putting her personal feelings aside to do what is best for her husband.

"Queen Camilla rushed to the July 10 Highgrove meeting to support her husband, not to win Harry’s favor," Chard said. "She listened and gave the king stability. Her focus is the king and the monarchy’s future."

But not every royal seems to agree about the Sussexes.

"Prince William still has no contact with his brother," Fordwich said. "The near future looks awkward. If Harry and Meghan avoid public accusations and stay discreet, William may be more open to limited contact. Harry could learn from Camilla’s calm approach to gain trust. Silence is valuable."

Kensington Palace, which represents the Prince and Princess of Wales, told Fox News Digital it does not comment on private family matters. Fox News Digital also asked Buckingham Palace for comment.

People reported that the exact location of the Sussexes’ private home and the children’s school is being closely guarded. The king learned of their plans on Aug. 16 and welcomed the chance to see his son’s family in a private, personal way.
