Goalkeeper to wicketkeeper? No problem for Martyn

Sportsmen being good at more than one sport is not new but being great at a different sport after retiring is unique.

Nigel Martyn did this after retiring from football, switching to cricket.

Martyn, who played for England in four big tournaments, is now on the England Seniors Cricket team at 59.

The former goalkeeper always loved cricket and started playing again after retiring from football in 2006.

He plays for Leeds Modernians and starred with Paul Robinson for Knaresborough Cricket Club in 2024.

Now Martyn's cricket career is taking off as he joins the England Seniors team for many matches this summer.

Martyn talked to the BBC in 2024 about his love for cricket growing up in Cornwall.

He said he preferred cricket but was better at football, and wasn't a goalkeeper in school.

He played outfield in football but kept wicket in cricket at school.

Martyn had to stop playing cricket when he turned pro in football to avoid getting hurt.

He played in the Premier League for 17 years and won the golden glove twice.

Now Martyn will continue his sporting career this summer with the England Seniors team.
