Penguin Experts Warn: Climate Change and Bird Flu Signal Trouble for Oceans

Global penguin experts have convened on Phillip Island, Victoria, for the 12th International Penguin Conference, bringing together researchers from many countries to share the latest findings on seabird health and disease management.

During the conference, scientists highlighted that climate change is rapidly eroding the ice shelves penguins rely on. Andre Chiaradia, senior scientist of Phillip Island Nature Parks and chair of the conference, warned that the “scary, fast pace” of ice melt threatens feeding grounds, breeding timing and overall population stability.

The meeting also addressed the spread of H5 bird flu. In August, a little penguin on the island died from the virus. Since then, more than 1,500 penguins have been vaccinated, part of a government target to protect 5,000 birds across Phillip Island and the nearby St Kilda colony.

At the close of the week‑long event, the participants issued a joint statement calling for “decisive conservation action” and long‑term research, stronger international collaboration and sustainable fisheries to safeguard penguin habitats.

The statement reminded the public that penguins depend on healthy oceans, so their struggles act as an early warning for broader marine and planetary health. As the declaration put it, “When penguins struggle we should pay attention. Their warning is about the health of our oceans and ultimately the health of our planet.”
