Special Scans Reveal How a 66‑Million‑Year‑Old T. rex Died

The Tyrannosaurus rex known as Scotty lived about 66 million years ago. Its skeleton was uncovered in 1991 in Canada, and the animal measured roughly 43 feet long, about the weight of two elephants.

One of Scotty’s ribs kept a tiny amount of original soft tissue, something that almost never survives in fossils. Because the tissue is very fragile, researchers used special scanning technology to look inside the bone without breaking it.

The scans produced clear pictures that revealed many tiny blood‑vessel tubes inside the rib. These tubes show that Scotty had been hurt in a fight, his rib broke, and his body began to repair it, but he died before the wound could heal.

The discovery shows how modern imaging can reveal hidden details in ancient bones, and scientists now plan to apply the same methods to other old fossils.
