What Windsor‑Essex learned from a radar‑confirmed tornado

Environment Canada’s radar showed a tornado moving across Windsor and the community of McGregor on Thursday evening.

Before the storm, people got several tornado warnings on their phones and on TV. Vanessa Bessette also heard sirens from Detroit, she said.

Essex‑Windsor EMS said the storm caused a few minor injuries, and the power company ENWIN said 372 customers in Riverside and 559 in Pillette lost electricity. Large trees were ripped out of the ground. Vanessa Bessette said a large tree crashed through her neighbour’s living room, and Danny Truong said a large tree fell through his house.

Residents had asked the city to remove dangerous trees for years. Bessette said they had made five or six complaints, but the trees were only trimmed, not taken down.

After the tornado, neighbours helped each other. Bessette said people cleared trees from the road, and Truong said neighbours checked on him and offered help.
