UN Fact‑Finding Mission Labels US Strikes as War Crimes – What It Means for Global Accountability

The Independent International Fact‑Finding Mission on Iran announced that it has reasonable grounds to believe the United States was behind two February strikes – one on the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab and another on a sports centre in Lamerd – and that both attacks qualify as indiscriminate war crimes under international law.

Iranian officials say the Minab school strike killed more than 150 people, including around 120 children. The school was identified as a civilian building and the mission found no evidence it was being used for military purposes.

The Lamerd strike hit a sports centre, nearby homes and a school. The mission reported that the attack killed and injured 22 civilians and caused damage to residential buildings, concluding the strike was also indiscriminate and therefore a war crime.

In addition to the U.S. findings, the mission determined that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during the crackdown on anti‑government protests that began in late December, citing unlawful killings, torture, arbitrary detention and severe restrictions on free expression.

The fact‑finding team is chaired by Bangladeshi jurist Sara Hossain. Its report will be submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, where 47 member states review such investigations.

The White House responded sharply, dismissing the council’s work as ineffective and claiming that only the Iranian regime has committed war crimes, accusing Tehran of killing thousands of its own people and launching indiscriminate attacks in the region.

These findings matter because UN fact‑finding missions provide an official, evidence‑based assessment of alleged war crimes. Their conclusions help define what behavior breaches international law and create a record that can be used in future legal or diplomatic processes to hold states accountable.
