Hungry Bears Push Into Towns as Forest Food Disappears

A mother black bear and her cub wandered into a pharmacy on Wallace Street in Hope, B.C., turning a routine shopping trip into a rare wildlife encounter and raising questions about why bears are showing up in towns.

The pair entered the Wallace Street Pharmasave at about 2 p.m. on Sunday and spent roughly eight minutes exploring the aisles, while staff cleared customers and called for help.

Conservation officers located the bears nearby, tranquilized them, and assessed the situation. Provincial wildlife biologists decided to kill the mother and release the cub back into wilderness.

Officials explained that bears that regularly appear in populated areas are not suitable for relocation or rehabilitation because they pose a public‑safety risk.

This incident comes after large areas of forest near Hope burned during the summer wildfire season, and extreme weather has damaged berry crops, leaving bears with far fewer natural food sources.

Lydia Koot, chair of the Hope Mountain Black Bear Committee, said the bears are hungry because there is little food left in the forest, making it natural for them to seek meals in urban settings.

When natural food is scarce, bears increase their calorie intake before winter, and the lack of options can drive them into towns, creating dangerous encounters for both people and wildlife.
