Why Alex Formenton's Oilers Deal Matters to Fans, Survivors and the Community

The Oilers announced on Wednesday that forward Alex Formenton has signed a one‑year contract worth US$850,000.

Formenton was one of five members of Canada’s 2018 World Junior team who were acquitted last year of sexual‑assault charges linked to a Hockey Canada gala in London, Ontario.

An independent appeal board later ruled that the five players breached Hockey Canada’s code of conduct, but only Formenton was deemed eligible for immediate reinstatement to Hockey Canada‑sanctioned programs.

Oilers captain Connor McDavid said, “I think he’s gone through a process, he’s been transparent through the process and that process has led him here today. It’s a great opportunity for him.”

The Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton said the Oilers’ decision “will have a significant impact on fans, survivors, and the broader Edmonton community,” adding that for many survivors the move is “a painful example of sports culture prioritizing talent over accountability.”

Fans voiced mixed feelings. Oilers supporter Mike Medicoff said, “I know that all of them were acquitted — the moral judgement is where I have questions.” Other fans argued that Formenton deserves a fresh start and should be allowed to move on with his life.

The centre warned that hiring choices send powerful messages about an organization’s values, safety, consent and respect, urging all groups to consider the broader community impact of such decisions.
