Alex Ovechkin’s United Russia Ad Sparks International Backlash

NHL legend Alex Ovechkin sparked a diplomatic stir by appearing in a United Russia party video just days before the Washington Capitals’ annual media day.

The commercial shows Ovechkin standing behind Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, with former Soviet star Viacheslav Fetisov beside him. The ad was released while Ovechkin prepares for his 22nd season with the Capitals.

In the video Ovechkin says, "I’m Russian, and I support my country. I’m for peace and love, and I hope everyone understands we all want peace." These words repeat the sentiment he voiced in 2017 and after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Ovechkin’s earlier political statements include launching the “Putin Team” movement in 2017, where he told reporters he simply “supports my country.” After the 2022 invasion he pleaded “no more war” and described Putin as his president but said he is not a politician.

Reactions were swift. Capitals general manager Chris Patrick called the situation “difficult” and said he understands why people are upset, while Hall of Fame goalie Dominik Hasek condemned the ad as support for the war. Latvia’s foreign minister placed Ovechkin on a “personae non gratae” list, banning his entry into the NATO member.

The episode shows how a high‑profile athlete’s political endorsement can quickly become an international issue, affecting travel permissions and drawing criticism from both sports figures and government officials.
