Canada’s Final Hurdle: Beating Cuba to Lock In a 2028 Olympic Spot

The men’s national team, ranked 13th in the world, will face No. 16 Cuba in the NORCECA qualification final in Moncton. A victory would secure Canada’s place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Earlier in the tournament, Canada swept No. 23 Mexico 3‑0 in the semifinals, taking the sets 25‑21, 25‑18 and 25‑13. The dominant performance showed the squad’s offensive firepower and defensive solidity.

The Canadians entered the final after a five‑set loss to the United States in the gold‑medal match of the NORCECA Continental Championship earlier that week.

"This was the last step before our final goal," head coach Dan Lewis told Volleyball Canada. "Our players have executed everything they needed to do up until this point. Now they need to rest and prepare for the final."

Canada already proved it can beat Cuba when it mattered: on Tuesday in Moncton, the team swept the Cubans in the continental semifinals, earning a berth for the 2024 World Cup in Poland.
