New Australian Working‑Holiday Rules May Shorten Backpackers' Stays

The Australian government has announced changes to its working‑holiday visa program that will affect the length of stay and the type of work required for most backpackers.

From 2025, the number of visas that allow a second year in Australia will be cut to 45,000, down from 57,000, and applicants must complete 88 days of regional work to qualify for that extra year.

A third year is still possible, but only through a ballot that offers just 5,000 places, making it far more competitive than before.

Interior Minister Tony Burke said a record backlog of 80,000 UK applications in 2025 will be processed slowly, yet British travelers are exempt from the new limits because of a bilateral agreement with the United Kingdom.

Backpackers are reacting. Gibbs, a 22‑year‑old Briton, said he worries the caps will make it harder to plan his surf‑and‑work lifestyle. Stina Svensson, 27, from Sweden, added that she may have to shorten her stay or leave the country.

The working‑holiday visa can still allow up to three years in Australia, but the reduced second‑year quota and the small third‑year ballot mean many travelers will have less certainty about extending their stay.
