How We Make MinuteEarth Videos (Behind the Scenes)

0:01Hey, this is Henry. I am here to talk about how MinuteEarth videos get made.

0:06We're a truly internet-based production company. We have at times spanned eight times zones,

0:11so we communicate using tools like Slack, Dropbox and Google Hangouts and

0:17a bunch of other things for file sharing and working together in collaborating on

0:21creative projects across the world. MinuteEarth videos begin as an idea or pitch from

0:27somebody - one of our writers - who's excited about something and want to

0:30share it and they tell the rest of us about it and we ask questions and get

0:34normally also excited about it they go off and learn more about it and do

0:38research and come back with a draft. In the research process writers will either

0:42read books or scientific papers to learn about material themselves or they'll talk

0:46to researchers to find out what's the newest thing in the field or try to

0:50get a better sense of understanding of the subject. It's a very iterative process

0:53of revisions, and drafts, and revisions and drafts that sometimes involves conversations

0:58between editor and writer, or feedback from the entire team. And then at the end we do a little bit of tiding up of the writing

1:05and he goes off the narrator and they narrate the video. Then we send the audio to Ever

1:10who does the audio editing and he'll cut the narration down from a bunch of takes,

1:14often with mistakes, into something that sounds good and is part of the video. And we must not

1:19forget that we also add music to the video as well. Then we go into storyboarding where the illustrator for the video

1:24will do kind of rough sketches for what is going to happen in each scene of the video.

1:28We will have several iterations of video storyboards, where we're trying to get feedback

1:33from everyone, and the writer particularly, but also everyone on the team

1:36as to how we can best visually convey the material we're talking about.

1:40Only when we have zeroed in where we are going with the storyboard, do we then have the illustrator

1:44do the final fancy looking drawings. We invariably have multiple at that stage

1:49as well but because the final drawings take more time we try to get as close to

1:53the ideal video as possible in the storyboards stage so you don't have to

1:56spend as much time doing the illustrations of changing illustrations

1:59that we already spent a lot of time doing. Finally once it is done we will post it online on places like Vessel and

2:05YouTube so that you can watch it, which is, I assume, where you're watching this video.

2:08This might sound like a long and convoluted process but it's made extra complicated by the fact

2:12that we're actually doing this in parallel for up to 8 videos at a time

2:16some are in stages of writing, some are at stages of storyboarding and illustration, so that we can have videos ready to go

2:22at more regular intervals. Hopefully you've enjoyed that little behind the scenes look at
