0:00The Avengers Doomsday trailer is finally
0:02here. And if you were distracted by
0:04RDJ's accent, here's what you might have
0:07missed.
0:08>> Before this day is done,
0:11we shall be faced with an unthinkable
0:14decision.
0:14>> The centerpiece of the trailer is Sor
0:16issuing a dire warning to the Fantastic
0:184, [music]
0:19Avengers, and new Avengers that the
0:21threat they're facing is a bigger danger
0:23to them than any before. They died
0:26facing enemies
0:28and threats
0:30that scared me far less
0:33than this one. Loki killed Phil [music]
0:35Coulson in Avengers. Ultron killed
0:38Quicksilver, but it seems pretty clear
0:40that the previous enemy Thor is mainly
0:42referencing [music] is Thanos. He wiped
0:44out half of life in the universe for 5
0:47years. Anyway, and Black Widow died in
0:49the process of trying to undo his
0:50actions. We don't actually think the new
0:53threat Thor is talking about at this
0:55point is Doom. More on that in [music] a
0:57bit. But what we see on screen in one
0:59moment proves that Doom is even more
1:01powerful than Thanos. A lightning
1:03charged sword dives toward Doom and
1:05swings Stormbreaker at him. Doom blocks
1:08the attack like it's nothing, holding
1:10back Thor's charge like it's no sweat.
1:12This is very similar to the attack Thor
1:15used against Thanos near the end of
1:16Infinity War. Thanos is still able to
1:19get the upper hand in the exchange
1:20[music] thanks to the Infinity Stones,
1:22but Thor's axe severely injured him.
1:24Without the stones, he would have been
1:26pretty messed up. Doom [music] just
1:28brushes it off. And just to mention it,
1:30Doom's use of the word unthinkable is a
1:33reference to the title of the comic
1:34story where he sends Reed and Sue's son
1:36Franklin Richards to hell. Fun. Early on
1:40in the trailer, Professor X is gawking
1:42through the window at something that
1:43sure looks perturbing. It's a huge orb
1:46that appears to be a flame, and the
1:48professor even flinches when it flares
1:50up. So, what's going on here? Anyone
1:53familiar with writer Jonathan [music]
1:54Hickman's run on the Avengers comics and
1:56the buildup to the Secret Wars event
1:58will instantly know. The Omosphere looks
2:01just like the comics [music] depiction
2:02of an incursion, the catastrophic
2:04collision of two or more parallel
2:06universes. Earth is the anchor point of
2:08these universe destroying events. So, it
2:10looks like one Earth is literally
2:12barreling into another. We've heard
2:14rumors that Doomsday will kick off with
2:16the X-Men's universe being destroyed in
2:18an incursion with the added detail that
2:21it's Toby Magguire Spider-Man's universe
2:23that is colliding with. We don't see
2:25Toby in the trailer. It's Shani who we
2:28see fighting against Gambit and Yolena
2:30Bova versus Mystique, so we don't know
2:33how entirely true the rumor is, but at
2:35the very least, it does look like an
2:37incursion is coming for one universe's
2:39X-Men. Their firsthand knowledge of
2:41incursions could be why they seem to be
2:43so keyed up [music] for a fight when we
2:44see them elsewhere in the trailer. What
2:47Professor X sees out the window
2:48seemingly isn't the trailer's only
2:50depiction of an incursion when Thor is
2:52sharing his warning about Doom with
2:54[music] his colleagues. That's what sure
2:55looks like a diagram of an incursion
2:57involving three Earths in the
2:59background. In fact, it even appears
3:01that there are three different diagrams
3:03breaking down this coming catastrophe.
3:05At the bottom left behind Reed Richards
3:07and Sue Storm is also a countdown clock.
3:10A doomsday clock if you will. Yeah, it's
3:12pretty easy to infer that this is a
3:14countdown to when the incursion will
3:16make these universes go kabooy. So no,
3:19the countdown clock that has been part
3:20of the Doomsday promotion for months now
3:22isn't just a marketing gimmick. It's
3:24also a key part of the plot. We're also
3:27pretty convinced that the threat Thor is
3:28warning his comrades about is the
3:30incursions themselves. Thanos had the
3:32where werewithal to wipe out half the
3:34universe, but these take out entire
3:37universes with impunity.
3:39>> We're going to need a miracle. The MCU
3:42has a storyried history of editing
3:44characters out of scenes [music] for
3:45trailers. In the case of movies like
3:47Spider-Man No Way Home, it made sense as
3:50Marvel hoped to keep the appearances of
3:52Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire under
3:54wraps. When the last of the four
3:56Doomsday trailers was released, fans
3:58noticed a conspicuously empty space next
4:01to Ben Grim as he introduced himself to
4:03King Umbbaku.
4:04>> King Embaku of Wakanda.
4:09>> Ben Yansy Street between Bloom and
4:11Grand.
4:12>> It made sense to assume that Marvel was
4:14hiding another character in the scene,
4:16but we figured that would find out who
4:1820 minutes or so into the movie.
4:20Instead, it's revealed halfway through
4:21the first fulllength trailer. Ben is
4:23joined by Sue as well as the new
4:25Avengers Falcon and who knows who else
4:28just offcreen. Also now visible, a
4:30perpetually cresting wave in the
4:32background. The original [music] teaser
4:34looked like it was happening in a
4:35massive desert. Now it looks more like
4:37the bottom of an ocean being held back,
4:40maybe by Sue's powers. So why would
4:42Marvel feel the need to hide that
4:44information for the initial teasers?
4:45After all, the end credit scene of
4:47Thunderbolts already implied that the
4:49team would link up with the Fantastic 4
4:51early on. Maybe there's something in the
4:53empty space to Ben's right that's also
4:55being edited out. Maybe the invisible
4:57woman is the teaser from January,
4:59[music] but she's, you know, invisible.
5:02Whatever's going on, there's something
5:03fishy about this shot that we [music]
5:05probably won't know about until Doomsday
5:07actually arrives. Thanks to the teasers
5:10all the way back in December, we all
5:12knew that Steve Rogers would be
5:13returning for Doomsday, but Thor didn't.
5:16So, he's shocked to see his friend from
5:18work back in action and young again. Hey
5:21pal,
5:23it's not possible.
5:25>> Steve has to prove he's a genuine
5:26article by holding Molia for a second.
5:29As he [music] does this, Steve sports an
5:31interesting look. He's dressed entirely
5:33in black, wearing a bomber jacket. He's
5:35also got a beard and some shaggy hair.
5:37This might seem like a reference to the
5:39last time Steve returned to the fold
5:41after a layoff. When he got back into
5:42the fight in Infinity War, Cap also
5:44rocked a beard and some darker duds, but
5:47these are even darker. So maybe there's
5:49a little more going on here.
5:51Specifically, Steve looks to be in nomad
5:53mode. Back in the mid70s, immediately
5:55after the Watergate scandal, Steve
5:57became disillusioned with the US
5:59government and gave up being Captain
6:01America for a while in the comics. His
6:03replacement persona was Nomad, a darker
6:06hero who didn't represent any nation.
6:08Specifically, Steve made sure his
6:10costume had somber tones. And what he's
6:13got on is pretty somber here. There's a
6:16quick shot of Loki's TVA card followed
6:18by a look at Loki himself. One fun
6:20detail of the card itself is that it's
6:22got the tree Loki creates out of the
6:24temporal loom at the end of Loki season
6:262 on the back. This tree isn't the world
6:29treeil from Norse mythology, but it
6:31serves much the same purpose. Look away
6:34from the card and you may notice that
6:35the pair of hands holding it aren't
6:37Loki's. They actually have black
6:39sleeves. Kind of like the black sleeves
6:41of a bomber jacket. Yes, we believe this
6:43is Steve Rogers holding the card. And it
6:46may just be Loki who coaxes him out of
6:48his idyllic life in the past with Peggy
6:50Carter and his baby. Tom Hiddston, who
6:52plays Loki, has even been spotted in the
6:54location where scenes at Steve's house
6:56have been shot. The appearance of the
6:58TVA card also makes us wonder whether
7:00there'll be any attempt to address the
7:02big honking Kang [music] question.
7:04Season 2 of Loki was all about the
7:06former big bad after all. Maybe they'll
7:08wave him away with a line of dialogue.
7:10Or maybe he's just entirely forgotten.
7:13By the end of Black Panther, Wakanda
7:15Forever, the people of Wakanda and the
7:17ocean dwelling Talakhan, led by Neymar,
7:20finally come to a truce after some truly
7:22brutal battles with one another. It's a
7:24hardfought piece that Shuri has to
7:26sacrifice a lot to bring to bear. And
7:29yet, it seems to be breaking down by the
7:31events of Doomsday. There's a scene in
7:33the trailer where Shuri suits up as
7:35Black Panther after a staredown with
7:37Neymar. Neyar just sits on his throne as
7:39[music] both Talakan and Wakandan
7:41soldiers seem poised to throw down. The
7:44Avengers and Fantastic 4 are also there.
7:46So, it seems like they're probably
7:48warning Neymar about the incursions. It
7:50could be that Neymar has a different
7:52opinion about the incursions than they
7:54do. In the comics, Neymar actively
7:56causes incursions to happen rather than
7:58try to prevent them, [music]
7:59thinking that destroying other universes
8:01will protect the 616 universe. He's
8:04wrong about that, but pretty passionate
8:06about his position. It's hard to keep
8:08track of just how many grand sendoffs
8:10Fox X-Men have had at this point, but
8:13Avengers Doomsday is poised to be the
8:15grandest one of all. It only makes sense
8:17that the fan service filled crossover
8:19would honor a longtime request, comic
8:21accurate costumes. We got a glimpse of
8:24Cyclops's blue and yellow uniform in the
8:26third Doomsday teaser, but the new
8:28trailer gives us a better look. That
8:30said, you might be disappointed if
8:32you're hoping to see all your faves
8:33together in matching outfits.
8:35>> You actually go outside in these things.
8:37What would you prefer? Yellow spandex.
8:41>> In Mystique's brief appearance in the
8:43trailer, she's decked out in blue and
8:45white before she disguises herself as
8:47the Elena. That's not a Fantastic 4
8:49uniform. Instead, it's pretty similar to
8:52her X Factor get up from the '9s. There
8:54hasn't yet been any concrete
8:56confirmation from Marvel [music] whether
8:57the X-Men in Doomsday are from the
8:59original timeline, the new timeline, or
9:01a completely different universe
9:02entirely. We can assume that it's the
9:04same universe and Monica Rambo meets
9:06Beast [music] at the end of the Marvels,
9:08but that's about it. Avengers Doomsday
9:11is a story about parallel universes. So,
9:14it makes sense for the movie to draw
9:15[music] parallels between universes.
9:17Unless you've recently rewatched
9:19Infinity War, you might have missed one
9:21way that the Doomsday trailer links
9:22[music] the MCU and the X-Men universes
9:24together. In the opening minutes of
9:26Infinity War, Thanos gives the Hulk
9:28[music] a beating so severe that he
9:30refuses to come out for the rest of the
9:32movie. Bruce Banner barely escapes with
9:34his life thanks to Heimdal's
9:36intervention, Bifrosting straight into
9:38the Sanctum Sanctorum's central
9:40staircase. [music]
9:41What do you want?
9:43>> I wouldn't say no to a tuna.
9:48>> Both the Sanctum and the X-Manssion are
9:50large, well decorated buildings that
9:52serve as home base for several heroes.
9:54Bruce's crash landing serves as a first
9:56sign of trouble in Infinity War. And
9:58Doomsday, [music] intentionally or not,
10:00evokes this moment by blowing up the
10:02X-Mansion's staircase as well. Judging
10:05by the way Cyclops rushes out and Gambit
10:07faces off with Shani, the invasion of
10:09Earth in the X-Men universe might just
10:12start the same way it did in the MCU.
10:14It's hard not to love Herby, the
10:16humanoid experimental robot B type
10:18integrated electronic who made his MCU
10:21debut in Fantastic [music] 4 First
10:23Steps. He may not have fantastic powers,
10:25but he can make a delicious pasta sauce,
10:28and that's basically just as impressive.
10:31>> Okay.
10:33Okay. Is this guy good?
10:37That is fantastic.
10:38>> With first steps taking place in a 60s
10:40style universe, the MCU's Herby has a
10:43distinctly retrofuturistic look. His
10:46eyes are two conveniently placed tape
10:48reels, giving him an extra dose of
10:49personality. But in his blink and you'll
10:52miss it appearance in the trailer for
10:53Avengers Doomsday, it looks like he's
10:56gotten a hardware upgrade. Not many
10:58people had complaints about Herby's look
11:00in First [music] Steps that Doomsday's
11:01redesign is much more comic accurate. We
11:04can assume that MCU Herby gets an
11:06upgrade from Reed, but we don't know
11:08whether it's for routine maintenance
11:10reasons or it's because his previous
11:12[music] body was damaged or destroyed.
