Why the $4.7 billion Via Rail car investment matters for Canada
For the first time in four decades, all of these cars will be built entirely in Canada. They will be manufactured and assembled in Thunder Bay, Ontario and La Pocatière, Quebec, while design and engineering work takes place in Saint‑Bruno‑de‑Montarville, Quebec.
The government says the project could add more than $1.6 billion to the economy and support nearly 700 jobs across Ontario and Quebec.
The contract also gives job security for about 250 manufacturing workers at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay.
