So far this year more than 20,800 flu cases have been reported, which is 69% fewer than the 67,000 cases recorded at the same time last year.

Last week Queensland Health reported 2,930 new cases, a 27% rise from the previous week, after a 44% jump the week before. In the two weeks from August 17 to 30, 294 patients were hospitalized with flu.

Flu season in Queensland usually peaks between June and August, and most people get their vaccine early in the season. Experts say the late rise means many people are farther from their vaccination, and immunity can weaken over time.

The free flu‑vaccination program for 2026 ends on September 30, so experts warn Queenslanders should get vaccinated before the deadline.
