At the All In conference in Montreal, Canadian and German officials announced a joint funding package. The Canadian federal government will put $150 million into LawZero, while Germany will add €100 million.

Yoshua Bengio, a leading AI researcher, is heading the effort with LawZero, the Montreal‑based non‑profit he launched last year. LawZero’s first project, Scientist AI, is built to be safe by design, concentrating on objective facts and avoiding its own goals.

Prime Minister Mark Carney used the event to call for a global, non‑industry body that can monitor AI risks. Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Soloman added that the funding fits Canada’s wider push for responsible AI development.

If the partnership succeeds, it could show how public money can create AI systems that prioritize safety from the start, offering a new model for international cooperation on emerging technologies.
