Earlier that year Katoa shone in the SG Ball competition, steering Penrith to the Under‑19s grand final. His teammate Billy Scott recalled, "You could tell from a young age that he'd play NRL," and added, "He was so mature, so calm and ahead of the game."

During the same season he featured in six finals matches for Penrith across three different grades – from Jersey Flegg to reserve grade – and emerged victorious in every one, a rare feat for a player of his age.
