HSBC Sells Insurance Unit in Singapore for $2 Billion

HSBC will make a pre-tax gain of $1.8 billion from the sale. This will also improve the bank's common equity tier 1 ratio.

The sale is part of HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery's plan to simplify the bank and invest in businesses with stronger returns.

The deal gives Allianz a chance to grow in Singapore's wealthy and regulated market.

The HSBC logo is on its 45-storey building in London, England.

Allianz Asia Pacific CEO Anusha Thavarajah said the deal shows confidence in Singapore. HSBC Life Singapore has a fast-growing business with local expertise.

After the sale, HSBC will work with Allianz for 15 years to sell insurance products in Singapore.

HSBC said in May it was reviewing its insurance business in Singapore.

The deal helps HSBC grow its insurance business. Insurance income increased 16% in the first quarter.

HSBC bought Axa's Singapore assets for $529 million in 2022.

Global banks are selling smaller retail and insurance operations in Asia.

The sale comes after another bank in Singapore said it would buy some of HSBC's assets in Indonesia.

HSBC is also looking at its retail business in other countries.
