Man Jailed for Taking Bets on Hong Kong Horse Races in Singapore

A man in Singapore set up an illegal betting operation at a housing block in Jurong West.

Ng Sea Beng, 69, was caught with over S$4,000 in cash and a betting slip.

Ng was jailed for four weeks after admitting to conducting a betting operation.

The court heard that Ng planned the operation in May 2026.

He wanted to collect bets from people near a block in Jurong West Street 93.

There were tables and chairs in the area, making it easy to host a gathering.

Ng had past contacts who would be interested in placing bets with him.

On May 6, Ng went to the block with a pen, a betting slip, and S$2,500.

He looked for people to place bets with him on Hong Kong horse races.

Singapore's last horse race was in October 2024.

Ng collected bets from at least three people for five horse races.

Police arrived at 8pm and caught Ng with three other people watching horse races.

They took the cash and other items Ng had.

The prosecutor asked for a jail term of four to eight weeks.

Ng, who was not represented, said he was old and had leg issues.

He said he could not walk steadily and fell easily.

The judge said the offence carries a mandatory jail term, but the operation was simple.

Ng could have been jailed for up to five years or fined up to S$200,000.
