Singapore's 61st Birthday: Volunteers Behind the Scenes

Singapore has a big display of flags in Toa Payoh Lorong 1.

The flags form a big red '61' between two buildings, led by Ong Kok Chee since 2015.

The display is a landmark for residents, says the 64-year-old chairman.

People take photos to share with friends, showing the big flag display.

Some seniors even tell taxi drivers to take them to 'the big number'.

Preparations started in February with volunteers assembling flag panels.

Madeline Chan is a 34-year-old volunteer who became a citizen in 2020.

She previously helped with security screening at earlier parades.

This year, she has a unique role in front of thousands at the stadium.

Ms Chan performs with the Singapore Armed Forces Military Band.

She had to learn military marching drills and play her instrument.

In symphonic bands, there are no marching drills, just playing music.

It took time to get used to marching and playing music at the same time.

Celeste Kan is one of hundreds of motivators keeping the crowd energized.

Motivators lead cheers, demonstrate choreography, and encourage spectators.

Seeing the audience smile and sing loudly creates a natural energy.

Ms Kan returned as a motivator after finding last year's experience rewarding.

TOUCH has trained over 10,000 youth motivators since 2000.

For Ms Kan, the sense of unity makes the experience meaningful.
