International Rescue Teams Save Chinese Worker and Nepalese Woman Amid Devastating Floods

On Saturday, a joint rescue team of Nepali soldiers and South Korean disaster specialists pulled Lu Haitao, a Chinese national, out of a 225‑metre tunnel at the Trishuli hydropower project. CCTV footage showed two rescuers carrying him to the tunnel entrance, and an army medic checked his condition during the helicopter evacuation. He was taken to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

In the same day, Nepal’s army rescued Chandika Kumari Shrestha, a woman from Nuwakot district, who had been trapped inside a house damaged by the swollen Trishuli River. Soldiers found her covered in mud, gave her bottled water, wrapped her in a blanket and air‑lifted her to Kathmandu for treatment.

The rescues come after the August 26 floods that swept the Nepal‑Tibet border, which have killed at least 1,300 people and left more than 5,000 missing, according to Nepal’s disaster management agency. Roughly 900 workers are still unaccounted for at twelve hydropower sites, with about 500 believed to be trapped inside tunnels.

Specialised teams from India, China, South Korea and the United States have been deployed to search debris, damaged structures and tunnels, highlighting the broad international effort to locate survivors.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah said that Ms Shrestha’s rescue “has given hope to the entire nation,” underscoring how individual survivals can lift spirits amid a massive tragedy.
