What Dovie Eisner’s Disability Teaches About Conservative Arguments on Life and Assisted Suicide

Dovie Eisner was born with nemaline myopathy, a recessive genetic neuromuscular disease. The condition left him permanently wheelchair‑bound and dependent on a breathing tube for most of his life.

From about 2012 until his death on 11 September 2023, Eisner was a central figure in New York City’s conservative writing circle. He regularly interacted with fellow commentators Karol Markowitz, Sohrab Ahmari and Armin Rosin.

Eisner’s philosophy rested on two pillars: the importance of fairness and the intrinsic value of every human life. He often played devil’s advocate, probing arguments from all sides while warning that assisted‑suicide logic resembled the Nazi Aktion T4 program that targeted disabled people.

Writing for the New York Post shortly before he fell into a coma, Eisner warned, “The logic of assisted suicide leads inevitably to the conclusion that those with doctor‑approved expiration dates are living lives not worth living.” He linked that reasoning to the devaluation of lives during the Aktion T4 era.

He slipped into a coma the year before his death and remained unconscious until he passed away on 11 September 2023. His death marked the loss of a voice that turned personal suffering into a public defense of life.
