Erin Brooks' Wild‑Card Rise: From Citizenship Hurdle to Back‑to‑Back World Surf League Wins

On Wednesday, Erin Brooks captured the Fiji Pro title, giving her a second consecutive World Surf League Championship Tour win after Australian Isabella Nichols withdrew from the final with an ankle injury.

Brooks entered the 2024 Fiji event as a wild‑card and went on to defeat Olympic silver‑medallist Tatiana Weston‑Webb in the final, becoming the first Canadian surfer ever to win a CT event.

Just a month earlier she had won the Tahiti Pro at Teahupo’o, coming from behind to beat Israel’s Anat Lelior and becoming the youngest surfer to claim that competition.

The back‑to‑back victories lifted her from 19th to 8th place in the women’s world rankings.

Born in Texas and raised in Hawaii, Brooks has Canadian roots through her father and grandfather; after an initial rejection, she finally received Canadian citizenship in 2024.

"I feel so amazing, I've just been having the best time these last two events," Brooks said, adding that the back‑to‑back wins seemed impossible at the start of the year.

"Erin's back‑to‑back victories in Tahiti and Fiji are an incredible achievement for Canadian surfing," said Lionel F. Conacher, director‑chairman of Surf Canada, noting the significance of a Canadian athlete beating Olympic gold medallists and world champions on the world stage.
