From August 7 to September 16, 22‑year‑old Dao Hoang Long, a final‑year tourism student at Saigon University, rode his motorcycle on a six‑week journey that spanned roughly 6,000 km, touching Vietnam’s four geographical extremes, the golden rice terraces of the northwest and the historic Truong Son route.
Long prepared by improving his fitness, mapping the route with GPS and paper maps, and planning regular rest stops. To keep expenses low he camped outdoors, stayed in shared dormitory rooms at homestays, and ate at local eateries, spending about $540 in total, most of it on fuel.
During the trek he lost a $385 drone to strong winds, battled landslides and heavy rain, and faced fuel shortages. A 17‑year‑old local teenager helped by guiding him to fuel and lending a raincoat.
Long says the experience taught him how to handle setbacks, adapt plans on the fly, and gain a deeper appreciation for Vietnam’s history and its people.
His story shows that careful planning, a modest budget and the willingness to rely on strangers can turn a long‑distance adventure into a powerful learning experience, offering useful lessons for anyone who wants to explore on a shoestring.
