Emily St John Mandel’s Exit Party imagines two parallel dystopian futures in the United States after its collapse in 2031. The story follows Ari, a newly freed prisoner, as she slips between worlds through a portal, confronting doppelgangers and a fractured society.
RF Kuang’s Taipei Story follows Lily Chen, a Chinese‑American woman who travels to Taiwan for an intensive language course. The novel explores diaspora, cultural identity and the awkwardness of feeling like an outsider in a place that feels both familiar and foreign.
Emma Cline’s Switzy follows David Hastings, an elderly man with Alzheimer’s who journeys to an assisted‑dying clinic in Switzerland. Through his fragmented memories the book examines mortality, the ethics of assisted death and the lingering ties to a life once lived.
Eleanor Limprecht’s Cul‑de‑Sac depicts Jacquie Cassel, a woman trapped in an abusive marriage. The narrative highlights international child‑abduction law and the mechanics of coercive control, showing how legal systems often fail those trying to escape.
Laura Elizabeth Woollett’s Hell Days investigates premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) while also probing society’s fascination with true‑crime stories. Woollett blends personal experience with cultural analysis, offering a compassionate look at a little‑understood condition.
Caitlin Moran’s How to Be Hopeful mixes personal anxiety about modern media overload with practical, small‑scale actions – from digital detoxes to garden rewilding – that aim to nurture optimism in a chaotic world.
Together these six titles illustrate why September’s list stands out: each author tackles a distinct, timely theme, from speculative politics to intimate mental‑health struggles, giving readers a broad lens on contemporary concerns.
