The DreamWorks Animation feature, released on Sept. 25, is the first major Hollywood animated movie to centre Filipino culture and mythology. It follows childhood friends Jo and Raissa; after Raissa moves to the United States for college, the two are drawn into Nakali, a fantastical realm inspired by Filipino folklore.
Nakali is populated by creatures such as the manananggal—a winged vampire that splits its torso— the kapre, a giant tree‑dwelling spirit, and a Filipino weredog, a shape‑shifting monster. The filmmakers use these beings as visual metaphors for the characters’ inner conflicts and the turbulence of growing up.
The voice cast features prominent Filipino talent, including singers H.E.R. and Lea Salonga, actor Manny Jacinto and comedian Jo Koy. Manila‑based Snipple Animation produced the film’s 2D flashback sequences, adding an authentic local touch.
Co‑directors Jan uél Mercado, a Filipino American, and Joel Crawford said they wanted to tell a story that reflects the richness of Filipino mythology and everyday family life. They hope the movie will encourage more Filipino creators to bring their own stories to global audiences.
By placing Filipino myths, language and family dynamics in a mainstream blockbuster, 'Forgotten Island' gives millions of viewers a rare chance to see their culture celebrated on screen. Such visibility can validate identity for Filipino audiences and signal to studios that diverse stories can succeed worldwide.
