Elena’s Move to Vietnam: A Choice Shaped by Her Husband’s Filial Duty

Người vợ Nga rời Izhevsk về Bắc Ninh phụng dưỡng mẹ chồng

Nguồn: Vietnamnet

Nguyen Ngoc Tung was born in 1981 in Bac Ninh. He moved to Russia in 2006 for work and, almost two decades later, returned home with his Russian wife Elena and their two children.

Elena, born in 1997, met Tung while he was working in Izhevsk. They married, welcomed a son in 2017 and a daughter in 2020, and built a family life in Russia.

Tung is the only son among six siblings. He has always felt a strong obligation to look after his ageing mother, a duty that is especially important in Vietnamese culture. He worried that Elena might not want to leave Russia for this responsibility.

In 2024 Tung’s father died in a traffic accident. The tragedy forced the whole family to travel to Vietnam for the funeral, giving Elena her first direct experience of Vietnamese family customs and the close‑knit community that supports elders.

During the 50‑day stay, Elena observed the warmth of the extended family and the reverence for ancestral worship. She said she understood why Tung felt compelled to be near his mother, and she immediately agreed to relocate with him.

In April 2025 the family officially moved to Bac Ninh and began living with Tung’s mother. Despite language barriers, Elena has started learning Vietnamese dishes, remembering birthdays, and helping with household chores. "Elena is very thoughtful," Tung said, adding that her quick adaptation has won the affection of his relatives.

Today, Tung’s daily happiness comes from caring for his mother while sharing a peaceful home with Elena and their children. Their story shows how cultural expectations of filial duty can shape life‑changing decisions and lead to cross‑cultural adaptation.
