Open‑minded mother‑in‑law helps Vietnamese bride and Malaysian groom blend cultures

Nàng dâu Việt và lời hứa của mẹ chồng Malaysia

Thuy Vi married Amirul Hamzad Amirrashid, a Malaysian Muslim, in July 2026 in Vietnam. Their families worried about distance, culture and religion, but the couple decided to marry.

Amirul’s mother, who had lived in Australia, called Vi’s parents on video. She told them Vi would not have to become Muslim. “She said as long as the two of them live happily and joyfully, that’s all that matters,” Vi says.

Both families went to the wedding. About 50 relatives from Malaysia and 300 guests from Vietnam attended. The food was prepared without pork, following Amirul’s dietary rules, and included chicken and seafood.

During the ceremony the bride and groom first wore Malaysian clothes, then a suit and a wedding gown, and finally the Vietnamese ao dai. Even with a language barrier, relatives sang, danced and enjoyed the day. “Our wedding was very lively… that is what made me feel the happiest,” Vy says.

After the wedding Vi lives in Australia with Amirul. She does not have to change her dress or stop her studies. The couple shares housework: one cooks, the other washes dishes; they also take turns with laundry and mopping.

The promise made by the mother‑in‑law is seen every day. Because the family respected Vi’s wishes, the couple lives together peacefully despite their cultural differences. Their story shows how respectful communication and flexible family support can help intercultural marriages succeed.
