Canadian coach Jesse Marsch, who led Leeds United in 2022‑23, has publicly demanded that Manchester City be relegated after the Premier League found the club guilty of massive financial breaches.
The Premier League’s independent commission concluded that City broke financial rules in every season from 2009‑10 to 2017‑18. The league says the club used “sham” commercial contracts to inflate revenue and hide costs by more than £900 million.
City denied any wrongdoing, calling the verdict riddled with legal and factual errors, and lodged a comprehensive appeal that will be heard privately by a three‑member independent board.
Marsch argued that the violations were obvious, telling The Guardian that “everyone knew” about the breaches and that City should be “punished severely, even relegated.” He pointed to the 2022 summer transfer window, noting that only Leeds and City reported a profit – Leeds after selling Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, City after paying £52 million for Erling Haaland.
The Premier League says possible penalties range from heavy fines and points deductions to the extreme measures of relegation or stripping titles. If the appeal fails, the case could set a precedent for how the league punishes financial rule‑breaking, affecting every club’s ability to compete fairly.
