In May 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the top of Mount Everest, a feat that still defines modern mountaineering.
While Hillary received a knighthood, Norgay’s legacy was often portrayed as the Sherpa who simply helped, rather than an equal member of the climbing team.
Australian director Jennifer Peedom says her new film “Tenzing” is meant to correct that record, showing Norgay as a full partner in the historic ascent.
The movie follows Norgay from his childhood on the high Himalayas, showing how his love for the mountain became a spiritual quest and how he fought prejudice within the climbing world.
Peedom consulted Sherpa community members and cultural advisers, and she cast three actors to portray Norgay at different stages of his life.
The film debuted in select cinemas and became available on Apple TV+ on October 16, inviting viewers worldwide to reconsider how history remembers the Everest summit.
By spotlighting Norgay’s perspective, “Tenzing” demonstrates how media can reshape historical narratives and ensure that cultural memory honors all contributors, not just the most famous names.
