Between 22 and 28 September, a joint operation by the Singapore Police Force, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Singapore Customs inspected nearly 13,000 travellers and 350 vehicles. The sweep uncovered 60 people who failed to declare taxable goods.
The undeclared items included several packages of mooncakes, two boxes of birthday cakes and a money‑bouquet intended for commercial sale. The total duty and GST avoided was S$7,810, and the authorities imposed composition fines totalling S$17,705.
Seven travellers also tried to bring cash over S$20,000, with single amounts of S$31,000, S$51,000 and a combined haul of about S$96,400 across the week.
Under Singapore law, evading duty or GST can lead to fines up to 20 times the amount owed—capped at S$50,000—and up to one year in jail for goods. For undeclared cash, penalties rise to a maximum fine of S$50,000 and up to three years imprisonment, the authorities said.
Travellers are reminded to declare any goods or cash exceeding the duty‑free or S$20,000 limits, either online up to three days before arrival, via the MyICA app, or at kiosks in airports, land and sea checkpoints, the authorities said.
