The Norwegian government plans to ask the Storting to pass a short‑term ban on AI smart glasses in places where privacy is especially important. The list includes health‑care facilities, gyms with changing rooms, schools, kindergartens, playgrounds and youth clubs.
The ban could also cover public concerts, sports events, parks, beaches, museums and shopping centres, but it is not meant to be permanent. Authorities say the pause will let them decide which devices need regulation and whether lasting rules are required.
Officials stress that the measure will include exceptions for vulnerable groups, allowing "socially beneficial uses" of the glasses in certain circumstances while still protecting personal data.
Adam Smith, a technology advocacy officer at Privacy International, called the proposal "a welcome protection against big tech's greedy attempts to extract ever more data, often in absence of any thought for the privacy or rights of others." He added, "No reality exists in which people expect to be secretly surveilled going about their daily lives."
A similar effort in the United States hit a roadblock: California's governor recently vetoed a bill that would have punished recordings made with smart glasses in private areas such as changing rooms and doctors' offices.
These actions show that governments are willing to impose temporary limits on emerging AI wearables while they work out longer‑term policies to safeguard citizens' privacy.
