Why wildlife crashes rise in the fall and what drivers in Saskatchewan should do

Robert Belley remembers the night his truck hit a moose near Lanigan in the fall of 2024. The crash left him with a serious injury to his left hand, and he has not been able to work in construction since, losing much of his income.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) says the province sees about 8,800 wildlife‑related collisions each year. Over the last five years, those crashes have caused an average of 400 injuries and two deaths.

Troy Corbett, director of traffic safety community engagement at SGI, explains that fall is a busier time for wildlife collisions. He says animals are more active and may travel routes they do not know well.

SGI gives drivers four simple tips. First, slow down, especially at dawn and dusk. Second, use high‑beam headlights when the road is clear. Third, if a crash cannot be avoided, steer toward the spot the animal came from. Fourth, stay extra careful when glare makes it hard to see.

Bernie Borgmann, owner of Hooker's Towing, adds that 10‑20% of the calls his company receives involve wildlife. He sees many trucks and cars damaged after hitting moose or deer, especially in the fall.
