The Norwegian government has announced a plan to temporarily ban the use of smart glasses in many public areas. The ban could cover parks, beaches, museums, shopping centres, schools, daycare centres, healthcare facilities, gyms and public events.
The main reason for the proposal is privacy. Officials say the glasses could record pictures or video without people knowing, which could make citizens feel unsafe.
An independent test showed that a hacker can get into cheap smart glasses without needing a password. This shows a possible security risk for users and for people around them.
Minister of Digital Affairs and Public Administration Torgeir Micaelsen said the goal is to avoid a society where people worry about being recorded without their consent.
Meta’s smart glasses, sold under the Ray‑Ban and Oakley brands, have a small LED light that flashes whenever a photo or video is taken. The light cannot be turned off unless the camera itself is disabled.
The government says the ban is only temporary and does not aim to stop all use of the devices. It plans to work with experts to create permanent rules later.
