Corporal Brendan Hannam, a 28‑year‑old father of two, was killed when a vehicle rolled over during a training exercise at the Mount Bundey training ground, just outside Darwin, on Monday afternoon.

Five other soldiers were injured in the same incident; two of them remain in Royal Darwin Hospital while the others were treated and released.

Chief of Army Susan Coyle told reporters that an investigation has begun. The site was secured and handed over to military police, and a land accident investigation board will also examine the crash.

NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole said police resources have been sent to help the Defence Department’s inquiry, acting on behalf of the coroner.

The soldier’s unit, the 5th/7th Battalion, is providing daily support to Hannam’s partner and children, and senior officials have pledged personal visits when the family is ready.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles both expressed deep condolences, describing the loss as a tragic reminder of the risks faced by service members.

Marles added that Defence is working closely with all families affected and will keep them informed as the investigation progresses.

Coyle emphasized that the investigation will take the time needed to understand exactly what happened, so that informed steps can be taken to reduce the chance of a similar accident.

Mount Bundey, a live‑fire training area used by the Australian Army and its allies, has been the site of previous incidents, underscoring the importance of rigorous safety checks.

The response to this accident shows how the Australian Defence Force combines formal investigative procedures with extensive support for soldiers’ families, highlighting a commitment to both safety and care.
