Veteran news presenter Richard Morecroft died at age 70 after a cancer diagnosis earlier this year. He chose the timing of his passing, according to an Instagram statement released by his family.

For almost two decades, Morecroft anchored the ABC 7PM news in New South Wales, becoming a trusted face in Australian households. He also hosted the popular SBS game show Letters and Numbers, showing his versatility.

Colleagues remember him as warm, generous, a consummate professional and a figure of absolute trust. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called him a “great Australian”, praising his humanity and his love of the natural environment.

Morecroft mentored younger journalists. Leigh Sales, now a leading ABC presenter, said he checked in with her when she moved to Sydney as a 22‑year‑old reporter, offering guidance without demanding the spotlight.

His legacy shows that professionalism paired with humility can build lasting trust. By listening, sharing knowledge, and treating every team member as equal, he helped shape a new generation of journalists.
