The organizers have confirmed that the Big Red Bash will return to Birdsville for one last edition in July 2027, marking the end of the event that has lit up the remote town each July since 2014.
For 13 years the festival has been a major tourism drawcard, pulling between 8,000 and 12,000 visitors annually and boosting the economy of outback Queensland’s small communities.
Severe rainfalls in 2023 and 2024 caused major disruptions, a scaled‑back version was held in 2025, and the 2026 event was cancelled after the Big Red sand dune was completely inundated; the site is still underwater.
Founder Greg Donovan said rising event costs and repeated flooding led to the decision to end the Bash, explaining that the combination made it impossible to continue safely and sustainably.
The loss will be felt across the region, as the Bash has been a key driver of visitor spending, supporting local businesses, accommodation providers and the broader tourism network in western Queensland.
