How Openness About a Vision Impairment Built a Genuine, Supportive Relationship
Chuyện tình của cô gái mù một mắt: Sự trung thực thắp lên kết nối chân thành

Chanelle Morris lives with chorioretinal dystrophy, a rare disorder that narrows peripheral vision and blurs detail. She is legally blind in one eye and only slightly better in the other, a fact that has long haunted her dating life.
Repeated rejections and the fear of being judged made Chanelle doubt whether anyone could love her. She often avoided public approaches, worried that her eyes would seem unfocused and that potential partners would dismiss her.
The turning point arrived at a women's golf event held at a driving range on the Gold Coast. While she was hosting, a friend nudged a man named Jed toward her, noting his interest despite Chanelle’s inability to see his glance.
After she disclosed her condition on her dating profile, the number of matches dropped, but the quality improved dramatically. "I got fewer matches, but they were more authentic, genuine and open," Chanelle recalls.
Jed admits he learned about Chanelle’s vision impairment immediately from her friend’s warning. "It didn’t change my mind at all," he says, emphasizing that her condition was never a barrier to his decision to date her.
Since then, Jed has become Chanelle’s everyday ally: he drives her when she cannot, reads menus and product labels without being asked, assists her on the golf course, and even helps locate restrooms – tasks that would otherwise cause anxiety.
Both partners agree that this level of openness has deepened their bond. Chanelle notes that Jed “shows up for me in ways I never imagined,” while Jed appreciates the mutual understanding that comes from needing and offering support.
