A game‑worn Chicago Bulls jersey from Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals has just sold for $14 million, setting a new basketball record. The sale highlights how a single piece of sports history can become a multimillion‑dollar cultural icon.
Hunt Auctions announced that Miami real‑estate investor Ron Firman bought the jersey through the auction house. The $14 million price not only sets a basketball record but also ranks as the second‑largest sale of any game‑worn sports jersey.
In that Game 2 on June 5, 1998, Jordan scored 37 points, added five rebounds and three assists, leading Chicago to a 93‑88 win that tied the series at 1‑1. The performance is remembered as one of his most iconic Finals moments.
Earlier, a Jordan Game 3 jersey sold for $12.26 million, while the all‑time record belongs to Babe Ruth’s 1932 World Series jersey, which fetched $24.12 million in 2024. David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, said the price shows Jordan’s significance and that sports memorabilia has become an elite asset class, comparable to iconic works of art.
The sale demonstrates that a single piece of sports equipment can achieve record‑breaking prices when it is linked to a legendary performance. It also confirms that memorabilia from iconic athletes is now viewed as a high‑value investment.
