Thien Lam Pagoda sits on Quang Te Hill in Thuy Xuan Ward, central Vietnam’s former imperial capital Hue. Visitors are drawn to its striking golden stupa and the rare Theravada style that differs from most local temples.
Founded in 1960 by the late Most Venerable Ho Nhan, Thien Lam Pagoda began as a small hut for meditation. Over time it was gradually expanded into the extensive religious complex seen today.
The monastery follows the Theravada Buddhist tradition, a branch less common in Hue’s historic Buddhist landscape. Its architecture reflects this tradition, offering a distinct experience compared with other local temples.
The pagoda is especially famous for its gleaming golden stupa and Buddha statues shown in standing, seated and reclining poses. These features have led many people to call it the “Standing and Reclining Buddha Pagoda.”
Today the site remains an active place of worship for monks and followers, while also welcoming residents and tourists interested in Theravada Buddhist heritage. Its growth from a humble hut to a celebrated complex highlights the living history of Vietnamese Buddhism.
