Haze Hits Health and Schools Across Southeast Asia

Khói mù bao phủ Đông Nam Á, ảnh hưởng sức khỏe và trường học

The haze from Indonesian wildfires is spreading across Southeast Asia, turning everyday life into a health challenge. Understanding how the smoke affects air quality, school schedules and personal well‑being is essential.

According to Singapore's National Environmental Agency, the 1‑hour PM2.5 reading reached 284 µg/m³, putting the city‑state into the "very high" band for the first time during this haze period. The sudden rise forced many people to stay indoors and wear masks, limiting outdoor work and recreation.

The East Timor government said it would suspend face‑to‑face learning for three days starting 15 October because of pollutant particles from wildfires in neighboring regions. The pause means thousands of students miss classroom time and families must arrange alternative care.

Indonesia is battling its most intense wildfire season in 11 years, a situation that has created regional haze and a spike in respiratory illnesses, officials said. In Central Kalimantan, the Indonesian ISPU air‑pollution index rose above 1,200, which is four times the "hazardous" threshold of 300, according to Environment Ministry data. Such extreme levels increase the risk of coughing, asthma attacks and other health problems for residents.

Honi Havana, an official at the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs, said Jakarta has deployed more than 69,000 firefighting personnel, up from about 44,000 in mid‑September. Meanwhile, Malaysian lawmaker Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman urged ASEAN nations to lodge diplomatic protests against Jakarta and called for Malaysian and Singaporean banks to cut financing to companies linked to land burning. These diplomatic moves aim to pressure the source of the fires and protect public health.

The worsening haze is directly disrupting health and education across the region, showing how poor air quality can affect daily life. Monitoring the smoke and supporting regional cooperation are essential steps to keep communities safe.
