Gen Z is using credit‑card rewards to cut everyday costs. This article shows how a student turns cash back and points into money for groceries, travel and emergencies.
Jordan Sheehy, a 23‑year‑old university student in Victoria, Canada, has three credit cards. He uses one for groceries, one for gas and one for travel. The cards give him about C$130 a year in cash back, about C$300 a year in travel points, and 2‑6% cash back on other purchases.
He treats the cash back and points like an emergency fund and a way to offset rising grocery prices. He researched the best card offers with AI tools and accepted a temporary dip in his credit score while experimenting. A 2026 Citizens Financial Group survey found 44% of Gen Z and 19% of millennials say rewards have made a big difference for their households, and 35% want rewards to help reach larger financial goals.
Stacy Francis, CEO of Francis Financial, says rewards work only if you use them wisely. She advises not to spend extra just for points, to set up autopay to avoid interest, and to make sure card fees are lower than the benefits. Using rewards carefully can help you save on daily expenses.
